I entered the door of Starbucks to three aggressively waving sixth graders.

“Good morning, Mrs. Nesdahl.”

I smiled at them and listened to their review of the blueberry refresher + excitement about the last day of school.

“I’ll see you there,” I assured them, “and I can’t wait to have you in class again next year. Have a great day!”

I left with my heart full. The day continued with gratitude notes from students, requests to sign yearbooks, and, honestly, a few tears for the amazing eighth graders (including my daughter) who will go to a new building next year while I stay in the middle school.

It’s been nearly two years since I felt God calling me to a hard reset in my life. Releasing the mother-elementary daughter Bible Study and developing a product site were long held dreams I finally checked off. Hanging out with kids in the school setting was an unexpected bonus. Developing student relationships, gaining teacher trust, and forming meaningful relationships with staff has given me a new sense of home I didn’t imagine.

One of the teachers knows that I’m a bit of a germophobe when it comes to filling out e-hall passes on the students chromebooks (who I am quite confident most clean approximately zero times during the year). When I arrived to her classroom, there sat for me two Bath & Body hand sanitizers for me on the desk.

How do we do this?

Certainly God’s call over each of our lives is different, but at the heart of it for all of us is an ear postured to hear and a heart willing to follow.

You’ll recall when I picked my Word of the Year, my hope was to finish book two before the end of 2025. That COuLd still happen, but, to my surprise, I had a teaching opportunity nearly every day and the Lord has revealed to me a better design for book two, which requires I be less concerned about timing and more intentional about quality.

And so, as summer begins, I reflect on both my educational work + ministry and give thanks to God who has woven them together to create better than I could have imagined.

Lean in, listen, PURSUE God’s prompting, and dream bright, friends!

xx Melissa Nesdahl
